To say a final goodbye to our old space and properly salute our dear cyclo, we had a bike crew come in and give it a spin. Julien Grimard who has been interning at Made of Stills and giving us a hand at building the new studios took the initiative and got this piece together!

It’s pretty amazing seeing photographers on a construction site! Things are moving at a fast pace and walls are currently being put up. By early next week, the whole place will be wired and we’ll be able to close down the walls and start building the cyclo!

Big thanks to Charles-Antoine Auger aka Chuck OG for his help today! Chuck runs a very interesting blog on being a professional assistant. You should definitely check it out! It’s here!

The Shop

A week has gone by since we last gave news on our progression but we have been keeping busy at the shop! We have a brand new door, new electrical pannel, plumbing for the kitchen and bathroom is well under way. On our side, we have been doing much planning, designing kitchen and bathroom as well as starting putting up walls.

We all find a speciality. Julien plays with Electricity, Nik shoots up the Nail Gun, I handle the Circular Saw and Max can do it all!

Everyday we learn something new, gain experience and speed! It’s exciting to see the space taking shape, the dream of a new studio becoming ever closer to reality. We built our old studio about 3 years ago. It’s amazing to see how time flew by and how our group evolved. But we are now building bigger and better for the years to come! Till then, more than 200 feet of walls to build. Enough said!

Studio Construction Day2

Day2-2

Maxyme, Nik and Julien hard at work in our future lobby and kitchen space while Simon takes a break to capture the moment.

Day 2 of destruction. We headed to the studio in the morning to get some work done. We had walls to remove so it was reciprocating saw time! Chunk by chunk we took down the walls of both offices as well as a bathroom that will be redesigned. We removed countless doors that we will be able to recycle! Mr Sylvain Dumais swinged by in between meetings to show his support. It’s not just fun and games, some of us have to work after all! Coey and Richmond also joined the team today to get rid of the awful tile flooring! Most of the demolition work is now thing of the past! We started tracing lines to put our plan to the test. Materials should be coming in early next week so we can get the construction started! Till then, lots of planning and research to design the space to its full potential. We’ll be taking a break from dust for a couple of days now to get some actual photo work done!

Day2-3

Julien tearing down walls!

Day2-4

Coey ripping out tiles!

This is where it all begins. We spent Day-1 mostly doing demolition work. All the fluorescent lights were taken down and we started tearing down some walls to open up closed spaces. We will be back tomorrow to finish the demolition work, start planning the construction and evaluating our needs in terms of raw materials. After months of research and negotiation, it feels so good to get started and get our hands dirty!

The New Made of Stills

Made of Stills was founded 3 years ago from a common desire to create a growing community of visual artists. From its 4 original members, the Collective has seen its number doubling in size, integrating new talents in its ranks from Photographers to Video Editors and Director. The Collective was also based with the promise of serving the creative community and through events like the SlideLuck PotShow, various exhibitions with free studio access, our involvement in Les Tremblements, the 2010 Haïti Relief Fundraiser and our mentoring program, we have done our best within our means to give back and promote fellow artists.

It’s with the same vision that we are now announcing the construction of our brand new studio space. Yes, Made of Stills has found a new home and will soon double its size, offering two new studios  as well as new facilities to its members. But most importantly, Made of Stills is becoming a Non-Profit Organization whose mission will be to promote the arts in many ways starting with a brand new Gallery space that will be available for new project launches, exhibitions and video projections from selected artists. This way, we wish to be the hosts of more events and activities that will be community driven. Made of Stills as a Non-Profit Organization will be the perfect vehicle to push this vision forward, giving us the tools and financial structure to pursue this mission.

In its day to day activities, Made of Stills remains the headquarters of the Collective, but will also offer its main studio for commercial rent based on availability. Located in the heart of the Mile End in Montreal’s most densely  populated neighbourhood of artists, we are looking forward to build something bigger than ourselves and committed to offer services to support fellow artists.

In the months ahead, lots of work will be done in order to reach our goal and the studio will see many project phases before it can reach its full potential. By securing a new space for years to come and giving Made of Stills a new structure, we have taken the first step into making this project possible.

This is the new Made of Stills.
